On 22nd September the Sun will enter the zodiac sign of Libra, celebrating the Autumn Equinox and the time of descending into the darkness of the underworld in order to face and overcome our subconscious and unconscious aspects in preparation for the birth of the Soul/Sun within. In the ancient teachings the movement of the Sun throughout the course of the year had always been considered symbolic of the journey to enlightenment and, in many cultures, the birth of the deity at the time of the Winter Solstice was closely connected to the relationship between the inner light and the truth, and the unfoldment of the cosmic spiritual energy of awakening.
The spiritual energy hidden behind the physical world is the sphere of causation of the effects that we see manifested in the physical world, while the Soul is the mediating force between these two aspects of existence.
From the esoteric point of view, the physical Sun is the Soul, the Christic energy within each of us, which follows a cyclical spiritual path of awakening to gradually reveal the connection between Heaven and Earth, the personal and the divine, the inner and the outer, the material and the spiritual. It has been described as the journey through the Ouroboros, the serpent/dragon eating its own tail, which is symbolic of the initiation process, symbolic of the Kundalini energy and the cycle of birth and death from which the initiate has always sought release and liberation.
The Autumn Equinox is symbolic of consciousness/light coming into the darkness of matter, into the body and the subconscious/unconscious mind.It is a stage of inner preparation to the revelation of the consciousness of the soul at Winter Solstice with the birth of the Christ/Sun/Soul on 25th December.
The descent into the darkness of matter, into was defined as the underworld, has always played an important role in the ancient wisdom systems, as it was given an important part in the work of spiritual transformation: the esoteric law of the fall affirms that the initiate must first descend before he can ascend.
In all cultures the Sun God has two aspects: the god of light, the day, and the god of darkness, the night. In the pagan myths Seth was the antithesis of Horus, Xolotl was the dark twin brother of Quetzalcoatl, etc., while in the Christian tradition we have the Christ and Lucifer. Lucifer, which means Light Bearer, is the Angel of God who tempts the initiate in order to induce his awakening to the Light hidden within. He represents the manipulation of the proud intellect, which has a great power over people’s weak wills, and he is associated to the dragon of the threshold.
There is no other way to search for wisdom and wholeness than facing the void. The Devil puts us in front of ourselves, of what we unconsciously are potentially capable in order to experience suffering as the result of our lack of awareness in our actions. As Jesus said, “Forgive them as they don’t know what they are doing” – (Luke 23:34).
In the esoteric Tarot the Devil (le Diable) is the XV card and it is referred to as “The Choice”. It speaks about the initiate preparing himself for a process of internalization, which involves being true to himself and opening his heart. This card tells us that we have to learn not to be controlled by our lower unconscious nature, but to rely on the high minded qualities, such as zeal and endurance, in order to connect to the voice of the soul hidden in the heart.
The Autumn Equinox is a time of sacrifice, in the sense of “giving up something in us” for the good of somebody, of rising what we find in the darkness of ourselves to the light/divinity so that it can be burnt in the light of the soul (as Autumn is associated to the fire element). It is an inner death of the ego and of the darkness in the subconscious.
As the initiate descends down Lucifer’s ladder (or Jacob’s ladder), the nine circles of the underworld (the Mayans divided the underworld into nine levels; the Aztec talked about the nine levels of Mictlan; in the Divine Comedy Dante assigned nine circles to hell), the alchemical process is activated. When he completes the work of many trials and tests, he has to climb back up in order to ascend and reach the City of the Nine Gates:
“Mentally renouncing all actions, the self-controlled soul enjoys bliss in this body, the city of the nine gates, neither doing anything himself nor causing anything to be done.” – Krishna, The Bhagavad Gita
In esoteric numerology 9 is the number that contains the forces of all the other numbers; it is about judgement and Divine completeness as it supports us in seeking for the truth about ourselves. It is linked to Master Jesus who assists those who are willing to free the self from the bonds of matter by enhancing the awareness of a sense of personal responsibility and inner discipline.
The Autumn Equinox is associated to the Crucifixion (Jesus on the cross expired at the ninth hour of the day), the Great Transition and the Power of the Christ. It encompasses the star signs from Libra to Sagittarius, which are the expression of the journey from the inner marriage between the personality and the soul, through the death of the 9 appetites of personality in Scorpio, to the revelation of the truth in Sagittarius, which also rules the 9th House: it is all about selflessness and learning to serve the Soul. The Equinox is the time of balance between the night and the day. It is significant that the it starts with Libra, symbolic of justice and perfect balance, and that Michael, the Archangel overlooking this season, has always been portrayed as holding a scale. The scale refers to the Divine Non Judgemental Justice, holding the sword of karmic truth (to reveal the limitations of where we are), which is asking us to align the inner and the outer worlds and find the point of balance at the centre. As we descend into the underworld of the subconscious/unconscious mind, the sword will give us life by rending the veil of illusion from head to toes until all our dreams and self-deceptions have fallen apart and the truth of unconditional love is all that remains. At this point we will understand that there is more to life than the material world and we will realize that Love is the only energy that can direct our will, revealing our spiritual intent. For this reason Michael is described as leading the forces of Light, wielding a fiery sword, the sword of insight, as his purpose is to support us in finding our own spiritual purpose in life.
In the Aura-Soma® Colour-Care system Archangel Michael is associated to the Equilibrium bottle B94, pale blue over pale yellow. This bottle is the other way around of bottle 8, Anubis, related to the Tarot card Justice, ascribed to Libra. The Egyptian God Anubis, the Guardian who was weighting the heart against the feathers of Maat, the goddess of Justice, at the time of the entrance into the underworld, is about doing what we love doing otherwise we lose the lightness of our being. Archangel Michael talks about surrendering the little self, the personality, to the Higher self, the Soul, in order to be able to follow the way of the heart (the green coming together from the pale blue and the pale yellow). It is about “Yet not my will but Thyne be done”.
We are entering a time of initiation to find the light/Soul within and the 9 energy, also coming from the three 9-9-9 Portals, acts as the gate of movement into a new state of being. It is about meeting the inner shadow with faith to reveal the potential hidden within. And those of us whose weak will does not align to the soul will be aborted stars. We are at the Gate of Initiation and our new foundations are about to be indicated. It is the time to step through unafraid of the transformation that will occur, as it is going to disclose the source of Light of our True Self. As the heart becomes more powerful than our mind, the grace of manifestation will be flowing into our Soul/Sun revealing our destiny according to the Divine timing.
“And a sword will pierce through your own soul also, so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” – Luke 2:35
